Twitch TV comes to Xbox Live

Headlines today are proclaiming that the growing video game platform, Twitch, has finally come to Xbox Live and is now available to Live's Gold Members. For those of you who don't know, Twitch.tv is a website that allows gamers to upload and share game play from their favorite video games . It sounds very to youtube, but Twitch seems to be so much more.

Twitch allows gamers to upload videos, watch videos from fellow gamers, and to connect with professional players. Specific articles are even going so far to proclaim that Twitch helps gamers earn money from gameplay. I'm not sure how this is done, or if these are just rumors, but evidence shows that Twitch favors participation from professional gamers. Twitch also allows gamers to follow gaming competitions straight from their site and to connect with the pro-gamers themselves.

I've never used Twitch before, so I decided to check it out. I assumed all the hype would equate to having a featured spot on Xbox Live, but this wasn't the case. Twitch wasn't featured on the Xbox Live main page or even on the featured apps page, so unfortunately you have to go searching for it. (Thankfully, the app is free and downloads fairly quickly). After checking it out, I got a sense that this platform was geared towards WoW and LoL. Most of Twitch's viewers upload and view gameplay from these games as well as Starcraft II. I don't spend a lot of time with role-playing games so I began to write off Twitch as another cool app I probably wouldn't use.

However, after doing a bit of digging, I realized that Twitch is not to be misjudged. It allows gamers to upload and watch gameplay from a variety of games (including first-person shooters such as CoD), and works as a network too. Both the site and the app cater to a wide variety of games, and I have a funny feeling that CoD gamers will soon make their mark on Twitch as well. If you haven't given Twitch a try, check it out for yourself. It's a great concept, and I think with time and attention, it will develop into a gaming staple.
