Game Review: Aliens: Colonial Marines

Synopsis:
You’re apart of a two-man team that has been sent out to turn the power on in Hadley’s Hope. You and your teammate are US Colonial Marines sent across space in response to a distress call. You’re walking down an infested hallway when all of a sudden you hear a burst of rounds come from your teammate's smart gun. As you turn around to see what he was shooting at, you hear something drop from the ceiling behind you. With a sense of urgency, you spin around to find yourself face to face with an xenomorph. Just before it strikes, you fall back with a burst of rounds coming from your pulse rifle, just close enough to catch it in the head and drop it to the floor, it’s acidic blood melting a hole in the floor and parts of your armor.
Review:
This is the kind of intense action you can expect from Aliens: Colonial Marines. You are a Colonial Marine that has been sent as a part of a team to respond to a distress call sent from Hadley’s Hope and to find out what has happened to the Sulaco.
For a fan of the Alien series, Colonial Marines is a must play. You find yourself seeing familiar faces, using legendary weapons and fighting the feared xenomorphs from the films.
Colonial Marines doesn’t take long for the action to start. Right off the bat, you find yourself trying to fight off xenos as they drop from the ceiling, rush out of vents, and jump up from the floor grates below. You do end up finding yourself fighting human enemies as well. When the sh*t really hits the fan, you and your crew just sit back and watch as your enemies, xenos and humans alike, tear each other to shreds.
During gameplay, it seems like the graphics are well done, but when it comes to the cinematics, it doesn’t seem very polished. There were even times with the voice acting seemed like it was trying to catch up with the cinematics. The music and sounds for Colonial Marines, on the other hand, were outstanding. When the music first starts, it’s like you're playing the movie. When you fire off your first burst of rounds, it feels like you have been dropped right in. Even the xenomorphs sounded exactly like you would expect them to, as they sneak up behind you to close in for the kill.

The AI in Colonial Marines was the hardest part to deal with. Allied AI weren’t the smartest and often got stuck on random objects in the world. They had a hard time hitting anything when shooting and did almost nothing to help advance the player through the game. Even the xeno AI where a little slow at times - after an initial strike they are slow to strike again.
The controls were a little difficult to master in the beginning, but as you progress though the game it gets easier. The shotgun is easy to get the hang of in close quarters, but as everyone knows, isn’t worth a damn at long range. The pulse rifle is hard to handle when shooting long range and you’re forced to use it due to the lack of a sniper rifle. You do have the option to add different attachments as you unlock throughout the game. Things like laser sights, optics and even the chance to change the grenade launcher to a shotgun can come in handy.
All in all, this was an entertaining game to play through. For die-hard fans of the Alien series, this is a must play game and maybe even a purchase. For die-hard fans of first person shooters, this is a nice step away from your normal COD multiplayer match with a good storyline and something a little different.
