Throwback Thursday: Crash Bandicoot

Happy Throwback Thursday Gamers! Today we're shedding the spotlight on Crash Bandicoot for Playstation.

Crash Bandicoot is a platform game that was developed by Naughty Dog for Sony back in 1996. The idea came from Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin during a cross country move from Boston to Los Angeles. They saw the popularity of 3D games arcade games and wondered how they could combine that with their favorite character-based platform game. After signing a developer agreement, Naughty Dog purchased a Playstation development unit for $35,000 and set to work.

The game stars Crash, a bandicoot who used for experimentation by the evil Dr. Neo Cortex. Dr. Cortex attempts to use the Cortex Vortex to turn Crash into a military leader, but the Vortex rejects him. Cortex proceeds to chase Crash out of a castle window and works to experiment on Crash's girlfriend Twana.

Crash Bandicoot received favorable reviews from critics who enjoyed the game's graphics and level design. The gameplay received mixed reviews, but Crash still became one of Playstation's best selling games with 6.8 million units sold by the end of 2003. Crash Bandicoot received a "Gold Prize" in Japan and made it into Sony's "Greatest Hits" line-up in September 1997.  With a reputation such as this, it's no wonder that Crash Bandicoot is welcomed into the vault!
