Throwback Thursday: Metal Gear Solid

Happy Thursday Gamers! Today's Throwback request came from one of our Twitter followers who wanted us to spotlight Metal Gear Solid for Playstation 1.

Metal Gear Solid was developed and published by Konami for Playstation in 1998. It was actually the sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The game follows Solid Snake, a soldier forced out of retirement and assigned to infiltrate the nuclear weapons facility of FOXHOUND. In this installment of the series, FOXHOUND has rebelled and taken over a compound in Alaska known as Shadow Moses. In addition, they've taken hostages including Roy Campbell's niece. Snake must work to rescue the hostages and fight Revolver Ocelot. Along the way, he's rescued by a Cyborg Ninja and has a short love story with Campbell's niece, Meryl Silverberg.

Metal Gear Solid was a success and was one of the most rented games upon release. It even topped charts in the U.K. The game received great marks from game reviewers such as Gamespot and IGN and is thought to be one of the titles that popularized stealth games. In 2002, IGN ranked it as the best Playstation game ever and was even featured in the Smithsonian's exhibition "The Art of Video Games" from March to September of 2012.

We're excited for the New Metal Gear and even more excited that it'll be available on multiple systems. With years of success, a new release on the horizon and an ever growing fan base, it's a no brainer that we welcome Metal Gear Solid into the vault!
