Throwback Thursday: GoldenEye 007

We're getting golden this week by shedding the spotlight on GoldenEye 007 for N64!

GoldenEye007 was an N64 game released by Rare in 1996. The game paid homage to the movie GoldenGun, which was the 17th movie in the James Bond series. Inspired by Sega's Virtua Cop, it was redesigned as a free-roaming shooter and allowed the player to complete a campaign. GoldenEye 007 also allowed for 2-4 players to complete in a death-match as well.

It's success came from the highly positive ratings it received from gaming media and GoldenEye 007 sold 8 million copies worldwide. It's considered an important stepping stone in the history of first-person shooters, because it demonstrated the development of game consoles as platforms for the genre. The game signaled a transition from the standard "Doom-like" approach to a more realistic style. GoldenEye 007 pioneered features that have since become common in first-person shooters, such as varied mission objectives, a zoomable sniper rifle, stealth elements, and a console multiplayer deathmatch mode.

This classic game was a key stepping stone towards the creation of the first-person shooters we enjoy today. Without it, who knows what our favorite games would look like? For this, we thank you GoldenEye 007! Welcome to the vault.
