Throwback Thursday: Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition

Happy Throwback Thursday!

I was wracking my brains out this week trying to figure out which game to spotlight. Yesterday, I came across my old Gameboy Color when it hit me! Can you guess which game happened to still be plugged in?

My find inspired this week's Throwback Thursday, and today we're covering Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition for Game Boy Color!

Pokémon Yellow was a role-playing video game (developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo), and was first released in the U.S. on October 19, 1999. It followed the infamous Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red that were released the year prior, however, the changes in Pokémon Yellow set it apart.

The game was actually a director's cut of Pokémon Red and Blue and was the first Pokémon game where the main Pokémon followed behind you. In Pokémon Yellow, Pikachu was the only Pokémon you could choose and it was even given his own personality to set it apart from the other Pokémon creatures. Pikachu could even grow to love and hate the player based on his action (causing Pikachu to level up would keep it happy, while fainting frequently would make it unhappy). In addition, the game also had it's own special Edition Game Boy Color.

Pokémon Yellow sold 600,000 units during it's first week of sales, and 1,000,000 million copies the week after. It surpassed the success of Donkey Kong for N64 and was given high marks by game reviewers such as IGN and GameSpot. It became the fifth-best Game Boy game of all time and set a loyal fan-ase for the future Pokémon games to come.
This game's popularity and endless hours of gaming make it the Welcome to the vault!
